What Does It Actually Mean to Be "Good at AI"?
AI fluency is a learnable skill, not a personality trait. Here's what it actually looks like.

In most offices, being "good at AI" is treated like being a morning person - something you either are or you aren't. The person who uses AI constantly and produces great output with it is seen as having some natural facility. The person who keeps getting generic results is assumed to just not have it.
This is the wrong frame, and it matters because the wrong frame produces the wrong interventions. If AI fluency is a trait, you hire for it. If it's a skill, you teach it.
It's a skill. And like most skills, it breaks down into specific, learnable components.
What the skill actually is
Four things that separate high and low AI performers
When you watch people who consistently produce good AI output and compare them to people who consistently produce generic output, the differences are specific and repeatable.
They give the model context before they give it a task
High performers treat the model as a capable but uninformed collaborator. Before asking for anything, they establish who the model is, what the situation is, and what good looks like. They've internalized that the model's defaults are generic, and that specificity is how you change that.
They diagnose bad output instead of restarting
When a prompt doesn't produce what they need, they read the output and ask: which component was missing? Was the context insufficient? Was the task ambiguous? Was the format not specified? They fix the specific thing, not the whole prompt. This is the difference between iteration and guessing.
They know which tasks are worth prompting for
Not everything is worth running through AI. High performers have a working sense of where AI adds leverage - drafting, synthesis, formatting, first-pass analysis - and where it doesn't. They're not trying to use AI for everything. They're using it for the right things, consistently.
They save what works
A good prompt is an asset. High performers treat it like one. They save prompts that reliably produce good output, reuse them, and improve them over time. Their AI capability compounds because their prompts compound. Most people write a good prompt once and never use it again.
What it isn't
The things that don't actually matter
Being good at AI has nothing to do with being technical. Understanding how large language models work at a systems level doesn't make someone a better prompt writer. Neither does being comfortable with technology generally, using AI constantly, or having experimented with lots of different tools.
The people who produce the best AI output in professional services contexts are often not the most technical people on the team. They're the ones who are clearest about what they need and most disciplined about communicating it.
That's a craft skill. Experienced professionals who know their domain well and can articulate what good output looks like often pick it up faster than junior people who use AI constantly but vaguely. Expertise in the domain turns out to matter more than comfort with the tool.

The training implication
If AI fluency is a skill, you can teach it. But the teaching has to be specific - not "here's how to use ChatGPT" but "here's the structure of a well-formed prompt for the kind of work we do, with examples from our actual workflows."
Generic AI training produces generic AI users. Training built around your firm's specific deliverable types, client contexts, and quality standards produces people who can actually do the work better.
